Derby

From Fitzroy Crossing we drove to Derby which is on the coast where the Fitzroy River meets the sea. Although it is on the coast there are no beaches, just a whole lot of tidal mud flats. The town itself is reasonably small but it had something we have been desperately missing the last few weeks - decent cafes! Although I have to say the prices were fairly outrageous-$7.50 for a chocolate milkshake! But everything is expensive out here.
We stayed 2 nights and caught up with some friends who moved here from Melbourne a few months back. Got to watch another lovely sunset.

We spent the day checking out the Prison Boab Tree which is an enormous hollowed out Boab where they used to bring the poor aboriginals they kidnapped and took out to Broom to use for labour in the pearling industry. They also used to chain prisoners to it as well. Very sad place. We had a look at the local Cultural Centre and spent the afternoon in the pool as it was about 37 degrees.
After our 2 nights we were very keen to get to the beach so packed up and drove towards Broome.
