Albany Part 2

On our last day in Albany we drove up to the Mounted Desert Corps Memorial which is on the top of Mt Clarence. It was originally erected in the Middle East but was extensively damaged in the Suez Canal crisis and was brought to Albany and restored. The reason for putting it where it is was due to Albany being the place that the first ANZACs sailed out from in November 1914. Mt Clarence would have been their last glimpse of Australia before they went off to war. The memorial is dedicated to the Mounted troops who fought in the desert in WW1 (eg the Australian Lighthorse Regiment). It is huge and very impressive.

There is also a beautiful view of Albany from up there.

We then went to the Princess Royal Fortress which was built in the 1890's to protect Australia. We got to see a cannon being shot, there were anti aircraft guns that you could aim and underground bunkers. Needless to say I was bored but the boys were in heaven!

We finished off our last day in Albany with a swim at Emu Beach in the beautiful sunshine.

We now have to head east again, getting closer and closer to the border! Next stop is Esperance which we are looking forward to seeing. All the locals keep raving about the beaches there so hopefully the beautiful weather will continue.
